‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’
Our core subjects are Maths, English Literacy and Science. In the spring terms our focus in Maths is multiplication and division and exploring fractions. English Literacy is taught through the theme – ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’, along with spellings, reading and handwriting. We will use our reading of ‘Stone Age Boy’ and ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ to develop the children’s diary, recount and instructional writing. History is the focus for this term and the children will be learning and exploring the Stone Age period and considering the changes which occurred during the Bronze and Iron Ages before the Romans invaded Britain. The children will learn how Stone Age people survived as hunter-gatherers and how over time with the development of bronze and iron these nomadic people began to settle and farm the land. They will learn about the significance of historic artefacts and how these can give us clues about the past before the time of written language. A highlight of this term will be the Stone Age days, during which the children will learn such skills as how to make fire using flint and steel and how to make nomadic shelters, in order to gain a wider understanding of what life might have been like in pre-historic times. These sessions will be led by an outside expert.

In Science the children will be learning about rocks and soils and how these change over time. They will learn about the three main types of rock, how these are formed and how classify them using their different properties. This will include a study of fossils and the children will learn about Mary Anning and her famous discoveries. Later in the term the children will investigate magnetism and forces.

During this term the children will be continuing to develop a greater world view and understanding of the worlds’ major religions with Islam being this terms focus. They will also explore mental health to help them to understand that we all have mental health, which can change and fluctuate throughout our lives. The children will also continue to keep fit through P.E. and learn that this too can help with maintaining good mental health. In computing the children will be learning how to make power points, and continue to develop their understanding of how to keep safe online. As part of their DT the children will learn a selection of sewing stitches to design and create a sewn bookmark. All learning will continue to be underpinned by our ‘Purple Learner’ strategy.

We are so excited to get started on our topic for this term which is all about Space: the science and the history behind our exploration of this infinitely fascinating topic! We are hoping to augment the pupils’ understanding of the topic with the returning Space Dome and hopefully coinciding with the launch of the Artemis II space craft!

And for the Autumn Term photos: We got to have so many exciting experiences in Autumn Term. Year 6

Our topic this term is largely science and PSHE based, as we explore the most incredible machine – the human body. We will start by learning about the organs of our body, our body systems and everything that we can do to keep our bodies working well. We will also be learning about how different substances effect our body and healthy choices that we can make. Later in the term we will discuss how our bodies change as we grow up and human reproduction. In a secondary topic, we will be travelling across the Seven Seas as we read the famous Treasure Island and start our Pirate Anthologies. Over the term, we will explore a range of writing genres, all with a pirate theme. This always proves to be an exciting topic and we look forward to reading the wonderful writing that our talented young authors produce.
